The tamarind is native to tropical Africa and grows wild throughout the Sudan. It was introduced into India so long ago, it has often been reported as indigenous there also. It is extensively cultivated in tropical areas of the world.
Botanically, the tree is among the large tropical trees belonging to the family of Fabaceae, in the genus: Tamarindus. Scientific name: Tamarindus indica.
Mostly available during dry season, tamarind seeds contain phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin c, potassium, calcium and amino acids. Tamarind seeds have numerous nutritional and health benefits.
The tamarind seed powder is also used in various other industrial purposes such as color printing of textiles, paper sizing, leather treating, manufacture of a structural plastic, a glue for wood, a stabilizer in bricks, a binder in sawdust briquettes, and a thickener in some explosives, etc.
Its pulp has been used in many traditional medicines as a laxative, digestive, and as a remedy for biliousness and bile disorders.
This spice condiment is also used as emulsifying agent in syrups, decoctions, etc., in different pharmaceutical products.
Tamarind contains ingredients that might have laxative effects and some activity against certain fungi and bacteria.
There are 2 types of Tamarind Seeds i.e, Sour Tamarind Seeds & Sweet Tamarind Seeds.
Its colors are Red, Reddish Brown, Dark Brown, Blackish Brown & Black with shiny texture.
